What is FES (Foreign Extra Stout)

• Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is a strong, full-bodied stout produced by the Guinness Brewery. It was originally developed for export — brewed with extra hops and roasted barley to survive long sea voyages. 

• FES is richer, more heavily hopped and more potent than standard Guinness drafts or lighter stouts. Worldwide, it’s the Guinness variant most common in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, and it makes up nearly half of Guinness’s global sales. 

• Typical alcohol content is around 7.5% ABV (though this can vary by market).

• The flavour profile is deep and complex: expect roasted malt, dark-chocolate or coffee-like notes, bitterness from extra hops, sometimes a hint of dried fruit or diacetyl-induced flavour (which gives FES part of its distinctive character). 

 What “Large” or “Big” Usually Means

In Nigeria (and many parts of Africa), “Large” for FES usually refers to a 600 ml bottle. 
For example, a common retail listing might say: “FES (Big) 600ml” or “600ml bottle (Big Stout)”. 

So when someone says “FES Large” (or “FES Big / Big Stout”), they’re almost certainly referring to the 600 ml bottle of Guinness Foreign Extra Stout — the bigger/standard “large” serving size, rather than smaller 450 ml or 330 ml bottles or cans.

What to Expect If You Drink It

• A full-bodied stout: thick mouthfeel compared with lighter beers.

• Complex, bitter-sweet flavour: roasted malt, dark chocolate or coffee bitterness, maybe some dried-fruit or caramel notes, thanks to the extra hops and roasted barley.

• Relatively high strength (≈ 7.5% ABV) — stronger than many standard beers.

• Because it was originally formulated to survive long journeys, the bitterness and higher alcohol were partly about preservation — but also result in a stout with more “bite” and character than lighter, lower-strength beers.
